The Fortress Range
Stone Flooring
Stone blends into any setting, be it contemporary or traditional. It can lift a dull and uninteresting hallway or bathroom and will stand the test of time and heavy traffic, is easy to keep clean and works well too with underfloor heating.
Fortress Stone stocks many types of stone flooring. The main types of stones are travertine, limestone, slate and Quartzite. Stone generally comes in three finishes: rivan, honed or polished. Riven applies mainly to slate and means the face will be irregular as a result of layers of the stone having been split by hand and not machined any further. Honed surfaces gave been ground to a smooth matt sheen. Polished surfaces have a high gloss and will soon become scratched, regardless of the type of stone used. Rivan surfaces look wonderful in rustic kitchen or trendy bathrooms but are less easy too keep clean.
Before you go ahead with a stone floor you need to consider that stone is best laid on a concrete base. Conventional floorboards even if in good condition must have plywood screwed on top of them to ensure there is no movement from one board relative to its neighbour. All stone needs to be sealed to stop the penetration of fluids and any resulting stains into what is a porous material.
